As a designer and manufacturer of modern clothes displays we just had to have a straight arm rack that could be used for t-shirts, totes, bags and more. We like to call it a T stand but this straight arm clothes rack is just so functional in any retail store. It is our answer to the rather unsightly metal or chrome straight arm displays that you see in many places.
Our approach: combine premium solid wood and powder coated metal to assemble into a refined and modern straight arm display. We are offering this clothes rack in white and black metal and with the option for an oiled ash or vintage brown base. The rack arrives in 3 parts and assembles quickly and easily.
Want this customized to your store? We love customizations! Just send us a note and we will get you a quote and also advise on options for your custom clothes rack.
]]>When we started, making our products locally was important to us. It was hard to imagine being so passionate about something only to leave the work to someone else continents away. There is a connection to the entire process that we just couldn't do without. The feeling of getting fresh lumber delivered, the smell of the wood being machined, seeing the wood come to life after being finished; these things all result in a better product for you.
There are brands that outsource their production to large factories that can still maintain good quality but for the most part when you purchase something is produced by disocunt websites like Wayfair or from some of the new Furniture brands, you are not getting the same quality. New furniture brands love to sell the designed in America or Canada but design doesn't keep your proudct from degrading sooner than it should. Furniture is designed to be made to last and we feel if we are going to harvest this precious resource, lets honor it by making it into something beautiful that will stand the test of time.
Again, we aren't going to make sweeping generalizations but knock down furniture doesn't join together the way traditional furniture does. That is with joinery and good quality glue. This is why we sell all of our bookshelves fully assembled. There is nothing worse than a piece of furniture that racks or wobbles once built.
When you purchase shelving and bookshelves from other marketing first furniture brands who produce their items overseas, you are likely getting a solvent and chemical heavy finish that will off gas in your home. You are also often getting veneer which is pressed onto formaldehyde ridden sheets of particle board and mdf. All of our products are made with solid wood and are finished with a low voc oil and wax.
When you purchase furniture from us and have a question about a purchase or even a potential purchase, you are going to get an informed answer. You aren't going to get a customer service employee on the other end. You will be getting an answer from someone who actually makes the product you are inquiring about.
As furniture manufacturing continues to shift overseas, there are less jobs for young people looking to work with their hands as a furniture maker. Without opportunities for careers, young people focus less on learning trades. Keeping vocations like design and fabrication alive is essential to building vibrant communities. Whether we are aware of it or not, good design and quality workmanship impacts our every day.
Because we work with our material every day, we are connected to it on a deep level. As exciting it is to see a lift of lumber arriving at our woodshop, it is also jarring. It is a stark reminder that our planet sacrificed this wonderful resource just so we could make something with it. We take this responsibility seriously and choose to honor this resource by making something that will last and turning this raw material into something beautiful.
]]>The space is whimsical yet sensible. Bold but not abbrassive. After seeing the new space we had to interview founder and creative director Shannon Maldonado to learn more about her life and the birth of this exciting new journey. We also are honored to be a part of this new space in the form of clothes storage in some of these unique rooms.
I have been making stuff since I was very young. My mom taught me how to use a sewing machine when I was about 10 and that led to me making and manipulating my own clothing throughout middle school and highschool. I ended up studying Fashion Design at FIT and worked for large brands like Ralph Lauren, American Eagle and Tommy Hilfiger before leaving to start YOWIE in 2016. YOWIE started from my bedroom in May of 2016 with just twelve products and graduated to pop-ups around Philadelphia and a storefront in 2017. I wanted to create a space that merged all of my interests under one roof and allowed me space to be creative while also amplifying the work of other artists.
I had always hoped the YOWIE brand or myself would branch into hospitality. The original hope was for a larger brand to have me as their in-house gift shop coordinator but I just kept working on building my own brand and shop in the meantime. The idea of expanding our own space to include hospitality came from a conversation between myself and my now business partner Everett. I told him I thought the brand could be more dimensional and it kicked off the idea of YOWIE becoming a mixed use space anchored by a boutique hotel.
Yes and no, I feel proud to have a point of view in design and for this project I wanted to challenge traditional color palettes and furniture pairings.
Yes, I grew up 5 minutes from my new space in an area called Pennsport
I hope that in some way that our space continues to show guests that Philadelphia is full of many creative people and that I have a unique perspective on design. I also worked on city guides to share Philly through our lens for visitors. We hope you're inspired by the items inside of your suite and that you also love the city when you head out for the day!
I've always loved the world building of The Standard and The Ace
I love working with artists and getting my ideas out into the world. I am motivated by creating beautiful spaces and products that add joy to people's lives. I also love mentoring some of the artists we work with and seeing their practices grow and evolve over time.
Maybe, maybe not. For now I have no need or want to open in another city.
The W in Hong Kong
If only for one night I would probably suggest heading to Fishtown, there's a great selection of bars and restaurants like Kalaya, LMNO, Beddia, Cheu, Next of Kin and more and you could possibly catch a show at Johnny Brenda's or a DJ set at International Bar.
Small, tight knit, and supportive!

]]>Recently, we interviewed Catherine Bernier, who when shes not writing and taking pictures is managing her vacation rental properties under the name The Parcelles. Take a look inside her life, vacation home life and of course the furniture she used in the new home in Eastern Canada
The Parcelles is home of two physical spaces designed by us (a little) and mother Nature (mostly) in Nova Scotia and Quebec provinces, where people are invited to regenerate their mental spaces; it’s a photography studio that spans well beyond four walls; a place where time stands still and where creativity emerges with ease.
In 2017, we bought the parcel of land of our dreams in Nova Scotia, where typical Acadian buildings are scattered across: a shed, a greenhouse, a chicken coop, a 19th century barn renovated into a house and a cabin by the water. My partner Gabriel and I are a good duo to transform ideas into reality. Gabriel does mobile architecture as a way of living and I'm a freelance writer-photographer, also creative director. We started by renovating the cabin by the water. The space has served as an escape from our busy lives and as a creative retreat for me. Inspired by our own experience here and while traveling the world, we launched The Parcelles to share the beauty of our space with others. Since then, we have hosted many artists-in-residence and visitors from all horizons. Then, we had the opportunity to buy a piece of land touching a private lake preserved by Gabriel's family, in Lac-Beauport, Quebec.
A lot of people cheat on quality in order to buy affordable materials and furniture, because they are planning to rent their place, but the truth is that if you invest into quality it will last longer. I'm tired of seeing Ikea furniture in every single airbnb!
It took us 3 years to renovate the cabin the way we wanted in Nova Scotia. We did everything by ourselves with the help of a few talented friends, on weekends. Then, during the pandemic, we were living in the cabin, while finishing the renos. We designed it for our needs first (we play in the ocean, so we needed space for our equipment) but also in order to rent it to nature lovers and artists like us. Storage was the key to letting the living spaces be vast. Once finished, we moved to our next project in Lac-Beauport. We honored the land by building a new architectural cottage drawn by Marie-Laurence Denis, Gabriel's sister, who grew up in the area. We could not have had a better fit. Marie-Laurence is now a new member in The Parcelles’ team.
You need to fall in love with the land and see the potential of a long term relationship. Which means, giving back to it and taking care of it. We want people to feel whole in the ecosystem and see their getaway as a way to reconnect with the creative and restorative energy found in nature.
Summer has been the predestined season to share the space with nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts, while Fall and Spring have been kept for artists in residency, at an exclusive price. Our main goal is to share our spaces with artists from all fields, genders, ages, backgrounds and experiences, where they can rest and focus on their creative projects. During their self-directed residency, they are free to build their week the way they want, but we encourage and support them to establish a relationship with the land and the local community. Each residency includes an optional private portrait session with me and a feature on our platforms.
I'm so detail oriented, I like to analyze everything and feel the personality of each place. As a photographer, I like to chase the light coming through a new space.
I like to create a mood board inspired by my feelings for the space, where textures and colours guide my choices regarding furniture. I'll look at Canadian brands first and will jump on the opportunity to build custom projects if needed.
When you choose to invest into quality, sometimes you have to be creative to save on money. That's why we did as much as we could, with the help of friends and family. It feels pretty rewarding to be a part of almost every step.
We are working on two projects now for residential houses that we're going to design with the help of Marie-Laurence and build in Nova Scotia. There is a huge lack of housing here, so we want to do our part, instead of doing another airbnb.
We traveled a lot this winter and stayed at amazing places, but nothing is comparable with something you have been involved so deeply in since the day you fell in love with the land to the last artwork hooked.
Gardening and collaborating with artists and like minded brands
We hope you enjoyed this Into the Wild article. We are always inspired by modern airbnb rentals, boutique hotel design and anything hospitality. We also love it even more when our hard work is integrated into these well considered spaces! I am looking forward to my next stay at The Parcelles.
]]>We are super excited about our new modern Fruit Bowl. We haven't released a new product since last year (our Double Wall Shelf series) and there is a reason for that. We are all about slow design. We like to be careful and intentional when we release new products and we believe our take on the fruit bowl is worth the precious resources that get used to make it. Here is why we we think our wood fruit basket is worthy of your produce.
Like most of our products, the ingredients are always important. Furniture making is a lot like cooking, where the most important input is always the freshest and carefully harvested ingredients. Our fruit baskets are made with domestic ash which involves careful machining, sanding and finishing. The well selected solid wood adds some warmth to your kitchen.
That is right. It is a fruit basket instead. The linear design of this fruit vessel allows for a more horizontal arrangement of your produce making everything just a little more accessible.
The other great thing about our fruit basket is the integrated ventilation. The two shelves that support your fruit and vegetables do not meet which creates a small channel at the bottom of our fruit bowl to allow for air to circulate through. This will allow all of the items in your fruit basket to
We opt for an environmentally friendly finish on all of the fruit basket variations. Two options have a water based stain but are top coated with a low voc hard wax oil that is friendly for this application. You definitely don’t want your tomato busting open and leaking on this finish but non of the items in your basket will be exposed to any harmful off-gassing from either a high solvent finish or from an unnatural building material like
Like a lot of our furniture and accessories, the simplicity of this fruit basket design makes it friendly with other items in your kitchen. There are not major design elements in this fruit basket. The focus is on proportions, materials and craftsmanship.
If you are looking for modern fruit bowls for your kitchen, take a look at the different options available today in our online store.
]]>We love retail and we consider it a happy accident that our clothes racks, shelving and hooks end up as displays for many retail brands across the globe. From our hanging garment or clothes racks to our wooden wall hooks, there are lots of opportunity to use our handmade products as merchandising displays for fashion and home boutiques. We thought we would visit Sömn Home to see how they used our products as a retail display or merchandising solution for their Vancouver store.
In addition to some beautiful photos of our floating shelves and hanging clothes racks, here is a story about the launch of their very first showroom in Vancouver's historic Gastown.
Our locally designed collection of premium eco-friendly linen sheets and cotton/bamboo bath towels have breathed new life into the often wasteful home textile industry. We’ve been proud to work with like-minded partners across North America as an online retailer, but we also understand the in-person appeal of a brick-and-mortar location. Our sustainably-oriented clients shop with intent. They are discerning and want to experience the products that will become part of their homes and lives, learning the stories behind them.
While online sales through our website will continue, our expansion into Gastown empowers us to meet increasing requests for more personalized service. We envision the new space will become a hub for collaboration and community where people can experience the natural, sustainable, lustrous, versatile, breathable fabric that has made Sömn a household name for linen lovers across North America.
The new showroom is at 28 Water Street. It’s a fantastic space, seamlessly combining Gastown’s lively retail landscape with an intimate, boutique shopping experience.
True to our sustainable roots, we decided to restore instead of rebuild. We reused, repainted, and updated the fixtures as necessary, including swapping out existing lights for energy-efficient LEDs. Sourcing locally by buying from Canadian manufacturers such as KROFT and Luminaire Authentik. We also hung linen curtains, made from our heirloom-quality fabric, to help delineate floor space, including a pop-up section for small brands ready to test their products in a retail setting.
Visitors can expect personalized service and attention from professionals with in-depth knowledge of Somn’s products and sustainable practices. We will also be able to advise on size, colours, and pairings. As a place to meet the owners, perform exchanges/returns and casually browse, we hope our showroom will inspire lively conversation and idea exchange, enhancing the strong cohesion and feeling that make up the Vancouver Gastown community.

]]>Earlier this month The June Motel opened their new outpost in Sauble Beach. Motelers April Brown and Sarah Sklash worked with local designers to create the perfect beachy vibe and we were excited to be a part of this new getaway.
The June Motel in Sauble Beach is their second hotel and was launched after the success of their first venture in Prince Edward County. The originally reached out to us in the spring for some items and after some discussions we were tasked to outfit the rooms with our Leather Strap Shelves and a custom Hanging Clothes Rack for their main shop.
The Leather Strap Shelf was used in all the of the rooms to support the mini fridge and offer some additional shelving for the guests belongings. We typically finish these shelves with an oil, but we sprayed this batch with a urethane to offer a more contract friendly and high usage coating.
All of the shelves are our 35" size and work perfectly in this renovated motel.
The other item we made for them was for the store. Our Hanging Clothes Rack allowed them to create a pop up retail setting in the store and hang some of the wares being offered. The custom clothes rack is in White Oak and suspends with the black cord.
]]>We love hospitality. Designing experiences is something that really gets our creative juices flowing so we were excited to be included in the room design of Somewhere Inn, a boutique hotel in Ontario, Canada.
Here is a look at our Wall Hook and Leather Strap shelf in these beautifully designed rooms.
]]>Our Bedside Table was initially meant to be a derivative of our bookshelf series. Three legs would touch both of the shelves to create a simple yet practicle small night table. There are no shortage of modern night tables. We try and stay away from brining new products into the market unless they are solving a problem that isn't being addressed adequately. While open storage on a bedisde table isn't exactly ground breaking, we felt this nightstand design was unique enough to warrant adding it to our collection.
During the design process, founder and lead designer Dustin Kroft, was drawn not to what was in front of him but what wasn't. Aside from it being really annoying to access a lower shelf with a three-legged nightstand, it occured to him that the optics of a floating top shelf would result in a far more compelling bedside table.
Sure, this meant the top shelf wouldn't be able to bear as much weight, but the trade off seemed worth it. It is rare that a design leaps off of a computer screen model and into the real world without the need for iterations but this bedside table was meant to be and did just that. As soon as the model was built off the first set of drawings, it was approved for production. Originally, it was designed as an everyday side or accent table.
But after prototyping and using it in his own home, the bedside is always where it ended up. A new product was born and we couldn't be happier with the result. The small night table is made entirely from solid White Ash. After the shelves are laminated together, the notches are cut, drilled and then sanded for finish. The legs are hand turned and drilled to pair with each shelf. The joinery; well that is a house secret.
All of these side tables, like every other piece of furniture in our collection is made in Toronto. Shop the natural finish (pictured above) or house blend vintage brown finish. The vintage brown finish is simply a stain with two top coats of oil and wax.
These bedside tables are designed and meant for lower beds, smaller rooms or as that perfect addition to a lonely corner in your home. The top shelf is strong enough to take most items that would go on an accent table but needs to be delicately handled. Any excessive weight on the front of the shelf could damage the unit. So, maybe keep it out of your nursery!
If you would like more information about our modern bedside tables or other products, send us a note. We often reply within two hours.
]]>Tkees Miami Store: Clothes Rack Lg in Black finish.
Finding unique and modern retail store fixtures can be difficult; we feel your pain! That is why we are on a mission to design and manufacture store displays that can elevate your retail environment and make your product stand out.
It is purely an accident that our clothes display racks and other shelving products have become beloved by some of the best retail brands in the world. Most of our products are designed with the home in mind, but after launching our modern garment racks in 2018, they immediately started to pop up in fashion boutiques and clothing stores all over the world - From Singapore to Paris.
After closer examination, and feedback from retailers, it has become clear that many of our products support retailers in their efforts to merchandise there wares in an original, clean and modern way. This has prompted us to further examine the utility that some of our other products can offer when merchandising a modern retail environment. And if you don't see a store fixture or retail display product that suits your needs, stay tuned because we are launching more soon.
Here are all the products that we offer that can help you with everything from showing off your clothes on racks to displaying product on wood shelving.
As you can see from the images above, our clothes racks can be used in a variety of retail environments. They are offered in 3 sizes and also in a variety of finishes. What is best about our clothes racks is that they are super easy to setup (see install video below for our Hanging Clothes Racks). We also super nerd out on the quality of all the ingredients so don't be fooled by some of the reasonable prices.
We also now have standing clothes racks which are great if you are looking for a feature garment display rack to show off some really special product. It is a wonderful fixture if you are looking for something a little more compact but still makes a statement.
If you are looking for a modern clothes rack that is original, our hanging clothes rack are the best option on the market. We say that because our hanging system is designed and produced entirely by us and we have considered every single aspect of the process. The mounting hardware for these racks is just as beautiful as the racks themselves.
We also have a basket of other retail display and merchandising products that work great in a modern retail environment. Our shelving, bookshelves, bookcases and floating shelves add something unique to your store environment. If you sell high end clothing, you should have premium wood shelves that celebrate the same quality as the products you sell. Our products can be used in retail dressing rooms or on the floor scattered throughout your fashion boutique.
We have also seen our table mirror popping up in places like eyeware stores. They are the cutest little mirrors that work great on your tabletop. The mirror is acrylic so you don't have to worry about the dangers of glass. They are lightweight and make for a great tabletop mirror.
Have a look at our wall shelving and accessories for more retail design inspiration.
]]>Wall hooks are always a fun thing to design. From metal wall hooks to wooden wall hooks there is no shortage of products to hang your goods from.
We definitely wanted one in our collection and it was important it offered something a little fun and original. The original wall hook was larger in size but was still compromised of the same intersecting wood dowels.
After launching the mini version of our original valet wall hook, we realized the shrunken version was all we needed.
So while our wooden wall hook functions much like the other hooks available, they are slightly unique in their design and one of the few premium white ash wall hooks on the market. We love using white ash because it is one of the only trees that need to be harvested due to the Ash borer beetle. It is also a great hardwood because of its density and also because it takes all kinds of finishes well.
The design of our modern hooks is simple; two intersecting hand turned dowels that form into the shape of a handle. The idea is to drape or hang things from the “stem” of the wall hook leaving the handle exposed. The introduction of wood to any space can always be somewhat cathartic. While these hooks are not dainty, they are not the best option if you require something super rugged.
Our wall hooks were designed to hang lighter items from like tote bags and can even be used as a swage to wrap cords around for lighting. Much like the diy lights found at the color cord company.
They also perform really well as a robe, towel or bathroom wall hook. A lot of the towels on the market these days feature integrated loops that slide nicely over our wall hooks when they are in a vertical orientation.
We invite you to be creative with our modern wooden hooks. We have even had customers use them as hardware for doors also known as a door pull.
Wooden wall hooks are sold as a pair and are available in a natural white ash, matte black or our vintage brown finish.
]]>We love when products we design for one purpose are discovered to work well for another. This happens all the time and lately we have discovered that our Hanging Clothes Racks, both our wood rack and our metal rack, have been popping up in mmodern laundry rooms all over the place. It comes as no surprise because the laundry racks - both hanging and standing - on the market can be a little "dry". Couldn't help but toss in a laundry drying pun. If you are looking for something more modern than those tired drying racks that are available for your laundry room, have a look at our entire hanging rack collection.
Our drying racks for your laundry room set up in just minutes (check out the installation videos on the product pages). We supply a rod, one singular cord (which makes for really easy levelling) and hardware to mount to your ceiling or to your cabinetry. The metal hanging clothes rack works perfectly as a drying rack becuase of the metal rod. The metal rod is powdercoated which makes it extremely resistant to moisture and incredibly easy to clean too.
In the image below you can see our metal hanging rack in the 50" size. The black metal tube have wood end caps which add a touch of this warmth to this modern rack.
Modern drying racks have come a long way from their traditional counterparts. With a focus on quality, unique designs, and premium materials like metal and wood, these hanging racks have become both functional and stylish additions to contemporary laundry rooms. Whether you're looking to save space or elevate your laundry room's aesthetics, a modern drying rack is an excellent choice. So, don't hesitate to invest in a drying rack that not only dries your clothes effectively but also enhances the overall appeal of your laundry room.
]]>Our modern bookshelves all started with our small bookshelf. This particular bookcase spawned 3 other variations including our Bookshelf, Bookshelf Low and Bookshelf Wide. Check out our modern bookshelves to learn more about the different configurations. All were designed with the same goals; timless design, clean lines, premium materials and of course master craftsmanship. As Dieter Rams once said, "only something well made can be beautiful".
The original Bookshelf Small took some time to create. It wasn't exactly the type of wood or the basic form that delayed this small bookshelf from manifesting. It was the proprortions and dialing in the scale of the six pieces that interplay. Once the all iterating was complete, we had a feeling that this piece would be used to store more than just books.
After we received enough feedback and orders, the small bookshelf grew into a tall bookshelf which grew into a low and wide model. The wide model - shown above - is three tiers of solid wood goodness. It is largest size we can build that can be shipped fully built. Get ready for a large package at your door when it arrives. But it is really nice to not have to assemble this shelving. The bookshelf comes out of the box and is ready for use immediately. Building them in our facility also means you get a bookshelf that doesn't rack or wobble; even after years of use.
Even though these are designed to be modern wooden bookshelves, they can be used in other ways throughout the home. Many customers have used the low bookshelf as a tv console and the bookshelf wide for open shelving in the dining room. Kids rooms have been filled with our small bookshelf and retail stores have even used this shelving to display product. It really is a versatile bookshelf. We do entertain some customizations for this product so feel free to send us your customization if you would like a quote.
]]>One of the reasons we designed our hanging clothes rack was because we wanted to create a solution or an alternative to storing clothes in a closet or wardrobe. After a discussion with a colleague 3 years ago it became apparent that this everyday problem was not being solved from all angles. Not everyone has walk in closets or closet space in their bedroom. And not everyone can store their clothes in a large wardrobe. The struggle is real! And as designers it is our job to solve problems. This problem of people not having closets or solutions to store their clothes in their room was going to be the focus of how we developed our own modern closet kit.
This conversation with a colleague about designing closet alternatives put the wheels in motion and gave birth to our hanging clothes rack or open clothes storage solution. Our ceiling mounted hanging clothing rail has been one of our best selling products since we launched it in late 2017. The clothes rack is can be found in rooms without closets all over the world and it has also been used as a solution for retail stores looking for clothing racks to merchandise apparel.
The market is filled with solutions for storing your clothes in your bedroom so we stayed away from some of the typical clothes racks that are available at places like Ikea or even the clothes storage rack by Normann Copenhagen. These manufacturers provide great alternatives for clothing storage but require a larger footprint and more space then we felt was necessary to create a solution for hanging your clothes in your room.
Because of this our focus was on a ceiling mounted solution for hanging your clothes. We thought about many different options but in the end opted for using 1/4” para cord as the material. We then designed ceiling mounting hardware to house the cord. The custom machined hardware had to be easy to use and look good.
After all, if your going to have an open closet it has to look good! So the way to make your room without a closet work was almost there. We just need a rod for the clothes to hang from. After all, a clothes storage idea when you have no closet all rests on having something sturdy and well made to put your hangers on or even drape your clothes on.
We opted to create two closet kit solutions; metal and wood. The larger hanging clothes rack has a metal rod and the smaller version is made with wood. The wood is machined, finely sanded and then either finished with an oil or water based lacquer finish. The wood rods really are beautiful. We put a micro chamfer detail on all of the edges and the solid white oak adds warmth and texture to your room without a closet. The metal is sturdy and powder coated and is finished with solid wood end caps.
If you want to learn more about our hanging clothes rack, you can view alternative clothes storage systems in our shop.
]]>We definitely didn't reinvent the wheel with any of our wood floating shelves. It is kind of hard to do that and sometimes focusing too hard on innovation can take away from the true functionality and purpose of a piece of furniture. The wall shelf has been around for ever but we feel our modern wood designs are crisp, meticulously made and and one of a kind.
No two floating shelves of ours are alike. We have shelving that is wonderful for displaying your items, shelves that function great in dining and living spaces and even floating tables for the bedroom.
What does make our product unique are the materials. We use premium solid wood that is FSC certified and we are woodworkers through and through. So, this means we know how to dance with the wood and make it sing. Solid wood is a part of entire assortment of floating wall shelves and we would love for you to check them out.
Our shelves are often found in homes but we also have been contracted to produce shelving for hotels, restaurants and offices. Above, you can find our floating shelf in a boutique hotel north of Toronto.
The wood wall shelf above suspends from leather straps and is easy to install. It can hold a considerable amount of weight. It is available in 2 sizes and can easily be customized if you need something specific to your application.
Our display shelf (pictures above) features soft details like the rounded ends. An integrated lip is machined right into the solid piece of wood and it mounts with our own proprietary mounting system. It works like a charm. This piece is great to use as a wall ledge for pictures, works for art or even just as a display for your favourite objects around the home.
