Understanding Solid Wood
Lets face it; solid wood is confusing! From type of wood to type of cut there are so many different variables that all need to be fully understood. Well, by your furniture maker that is. But as a customer it helps to understand your options so that you know what you are getting.
For the customers that do care, it is important to know what you are buying. Solid wood takes many different forms, shapes, colors and options. A lot of case goods, aren't built entirely out of solid wood. Many feature MDF core panels sandwiched with veneer. At KROFT, we mainly use solid wood for all types of construction but there is usually a price to pay for that. Veneer is usually razor thin so it has its disadvantages but it is often cheaper than solid wood products.
I could go into each and every aspect of solid wood furniture but it would take me more time than I have to document. I think what is important is that you ask questions when you shop for furniture. There are many great guides that explain each type of wood in great detail.
One of the most rewarding things about having a new furniture store has been meeting with customers and explaining the furniture making process. Whether you are interested in our furniture or not, feel free to pop in to talk shop anytime. I would be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
